Il fiore non sa di essere un fiore finché non fiorisce. Settembre nero racconta la fioritura di un ragazzo di dodici anni, Gigio Bellandi, durante un’estate in Versilia nel 1972: la scoperta della musica, della lettura, dell’inquietudine, del desiderio, dell’amore – e poi di tutto questo l’impensabile, fulminea interruzione. Ricostruisce con plastica precisione le immagini, gli odori, i colori e i suoni che animavano quella vita andata perduta, e con vaghezza, invece, perché subìto senza tante spiegazioni, l’evento irreversibile che la travolge. Intorno a Gigio, vittime e colpevoli mescolati insieme, in una costellazione di personaggi struggenti e indimenticabili: il padre-tritone, la madre-leonessa, l’eroica sorellina e i due principali responsabili del suo improvviso sbocciare: lo zio Giotti, misterioso, timidissimo e purissimo Maestro della Forza, e Astel Raimondi, la ragazzina dalle treccine “nere come onice nera”, che fa in tempo a marchiarlo col segno indelebile dell’amore. La voce narrante è dello stesso Gigio, dal monte ventoso dei suoi sessant’anni, perché evidentemente ce l’ha fatta a risanare la ferita e ad andare oltre, cioè a “tradurre” alla fine anche se stesso, diventando così l’ultimo degli “eroi normali” tanto cari a Veronesi.
